"Head Tripped" ~12~ Exhausted, Duo fell into an uneasy sleep. He had thrown the spread to the foot of the bed after Heero left, and had turned onto his stomach. The thin sheet had twined around his legs as he twisted uncomfortably back and forth. Duo whimpered softly, turning his head one way, then the other. Heero had waited at the door, listening to see that Duo was alright. When he heard the indistinct noises coming from the bed, Heero cracked open the door to check on Duo. He watched Duo restlessly turning on the bed, then closed the door and headed downstairs. Trowa, Wufei, and Quatre were in the living room, sitting in a circle. All three looked up as Heero appeared at the bottom of the stairs. "How is he?" Wufei asked. "He was pretty upset at first, but he calmed down as we talked." Heero moved to the sofa, sitting by Wufei. "Did you -" Quatre hesitated, unsure about whether to voice the question on everyone's mind. "We talked about it, Quatre," Heero said softly. "I told him how - I felt." "And?" Trowa asked. "He didn't say much, just grew quiet. He seemed troubled. He kept saying that he needed to sleep." All four pilots sat alone with their thoughts. After a while, Wufei spoke. "Heero, you say you think a demon is invading Duo's dreams - an incubus, right?" "Yes." "Why?" "Because of my own dreams, Wufei. I've been visited by a boy who insists on me coming with him. He reminds me of Duo a lot, but he gets violent when I won't go with him." "Violent how?" "He raises his voice, starts kicking the foot of the bed." "And you think this means you're being visited by a demon?" "Well, what else could it be?" "How about your own subconscious struggle with your feelings about Duo?" Heero's eyes flicked left to Trowa, who kept his face still. "It's true that I've been hiding my feelings from myself, but that doesn't mean that -" "Come on, Heero!" Wufei's voice grew stronger. "You're the most logical one among us here except for Quatre. Why would you just assume something supernatural is going on?" "I - I don't know, Wufei. It just seemed -" "Just seemed like the thing to do, huh? Seems pretty stupid to me." "Hey, Wufei," Quatre said, "ease up, okay? Heero's going through a lot right now. He's told Duo he cares about him, and has even shared that with us. You know how private a person he is. He's worried about what's happening to Duo, too. So -" "Okay, Winner. I get it." Wufei seemed embarrassed yet unwilling to relent. "I'm not trying to put you down, Heero, but it seems terribly illogical to me to jump to the conclusion that a demon is involved here. What draws you to that assumption?" "Wufei," Heero said, looking the Chinese boy directly in the eye, "All I can tell you is that I just know. I have no logical reason to believe what I'm telling you." "Okay, then," Trowa said. "Let's assume that Heero's right. He's the one who's most concerned with helping Duo here, so let's support him until we have evidence that he's wrong. What do you want to do, Heero?" "Well, this may sound crazy, but I think I need to go to sleep." "What?!" Trowa, Quatre, Wufei, all spoke as one. "I'm saying that if my theory is correct, then the boy in my dream is the same demon that's attacking Duo. If I go to sleep, try to dream, then offer myself to the boy, maybe I can find out what he's doing to Duo." Heero searched the eyes of his friends, hoping that they didn't think he was losing his mind. Silence. One by one the three pilots dropped their eyes as Heero looked at them in turn. Finally Quatre looked up and spoke. "Heero, if you think this will help Duo, then you should do it. I think we all support anything you can do to help him. Right, guys?" Trowa looked up and nodded ever so slightly. Wufei looked up but wouldn't meet Heero's eyes. "Okay, then. I'm gonna try to reach this incubus, if that's what he is, and find out what he's doing with Duo." Heero stood and walked out of the kitchen and up the stairs. When the door to Heero's room closed softly, Wufei spoke in a rough undertone. "Winner! Are you nuts? There's no way that this makes any sense. How can you encourage Heero to do this? If anything, he needs as much help as Duo does for even thinking this could be a solution." "Quatre may be on the right track, Wufei," Trowa said. "If Heero's right, then this may indeed be the only way to help Duo. And if he's wrong, then at least Heero's doing /something/. Even if it doesn't help, there's not much way I see that it could do any harm, either. Let Heero try what he can. If you can't support his actions, at least keep your dissent quiet." Wufei scowled and crossed his arms. Quatre's looked at Trowa with worried eyes as he took Trowa's arm in his, sliding their fingers into an interlocking embrace. TBC |
